"TRiP MAGAZEEN: The Complete Collection 1992-1994" (2025) by Peter Wohelski, DJ Three, and Grumptronix.

House and techno emerged in Chicago and Detroit in the late 1980s, but returned to American soil in the early 1990s, reimagined as "rave," or hardcore techno, in the UK, Belgium, Germany, and elsewhere. British live acts like The Shamen, 808 State, Altern-8, and The Prodigy gave a face to what many Americans called "faceless music," and quietly brought to a close the era of alternative dance music in the American club scene.

In a time before the internet and before connecting with like-minded people was just a few clicks away, news of underground dance culture spread by word of mouth and through self-published pamphlets known as "zines," which were created and distributed by those inside the scene: DJs, artists, record shops, clothing stores, and more.

Tampa, a city in central Florida, boasted one of the richest rave scenes in the United States at the time. Published there by Peter Wohelski, DJ Three, and Grumptronix, TRiP MAGAZEEN documented the burgeoning American rave culture from 1992 to 1994, while simultaneously resonating with global trends. Covering 16 issues, TRiP offers a glimpse into the underground scene from the perspective of those involved, as rave reached its peak and then collapsed as a major label commodity. With over 750 multi-genre record reviews and DJ/shop charts, it paints a detailed map of the music scene of the time.

Founded in a pre-internet era using early desktop publishing tools, TRiP was one of America's first dance culture magazines, conducting over 60 interviews with a stellar list of names, including Aphex Twin, The Prodigy, Moby, Richie Hawtin & John Acquaviva (Plus 8), DJ Hell, J. Saul Kane (Vinyl Solution), Cabaret Voltaire, Orbital, The Orb, Autechre, Laurent Garnier, Dubtribe Sound System, Hardkiss Music, Caspar Pound (Rising High Records), Mixmaster Morris, Inner City, Terre Thaemlitz (DJ Sprinkles), Paul van Dyk, Seefeel, Black Dog Productions, Future Sound Of London, Global Communication, Dan Donnelly (Suburban Bass), Rob Playford, A Guy Called Gerald, and rave thinker and psychedelic explorer Terence McKenna.

Over its two-and-a-half-year run, TRiP has garnered attention from leading UK dance publications like DJ Magazine, Mixmag, and Jockey Slut, as well as German fanzine Size. Articles about Aphex Twin, Future Sound of London, and Laurent Garnier have featured excerpts from TRiP interviews, complete with credits. Detroit legend and Underground Resistance co-founder Mad Mike Banks even sent a postcard with a tribute: "Thank you for treating Detroit artists and their work with respect."
