This is "When the Garden Shape is Born" (2023) by Tomoki Yamauchi.

When we look at a garden, what do we see?
What do gardeners do when they create a garden?
First of all, why is the garden shaped like this?

This book was written by Tomoki Yamauchi, a gardener and aesthetics researcher.
This "Reiwa Garden Creation Record" is a record of how the garden was created, based on fieldwork conducted at Kannonji Temple in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto, and the construction of the Daishoin Garden.

About the garden, about the rock arrangement, about the planting, about the space, about the flow, about the parts and the whole...
This is a unique and new "theory of production" that thoroughly observes the production process, analyzes the logic of the form (shape and structure), and considers what is happening between "the thing produced" and "the one who produces it." It stretches out the time axis from a microscopic perspective and carefully deciphers the moment when a form is born.

When you look at artworks, buildings, or gardens, you may feel as though you have gained a deeper understanding from the captions placed nearby, but you may end up just saying, "I see," or "That's true." This book delves deeply into the vague sensations and words that we tend to use to make ourselves seem as if we understand something, and helps us see what we can see but cannot see. (Ammel)
