This is the catalogue for the exhibition "The Origins of Photography in Britain," which was held for two months from March 2019. The culture of photography began in 1839 with the publication of the first photographic technology, and in Britain, it was rooted in Victorian culture. Research into British photography developed among aristocratic society and spread widely as a cultural phenomenon. This exhibition will showcase the diverse scope of British photography culture, which was previously unknown in Japan, with many works never before exhibited in Japan. It was an exhibition that allowed visitors to experience the British photography culture that Japanese people admired from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, and the breadth of its history.
